The outdoors is not simply reserved for the summertime folks. Victoria Hype has compiled a list of our favourite fall hikes on the island. Take a look!

Cathedral Grove

This awe-inspiring hike is located within MacMillan Provincial Park just outside of Port Alberni. Here you will find two trailheads: one north and one south. Both allow you to wander into the depths of the massive Douglas Fir giants. These trees are over 300 years old and are absolutely breathtaking. Allow yourself time to read the numerous write ups and track down the tallest tree in the woods – over 75 metres tall!

Fallen Plane

I’m not entirely sure if this is the official name for this hike, but it describes it quite well. The story is that this plane crashed right near Pacific Rim Highway shortly after leaving Tofino Airport on the 9th of February 1945. All passengers on board this flight survived, but the wreckage remains. Nowadays you can view the entire plane if you’re willing to get your hands (feet, legs, etc.) dirty.

Mystic Beach

The hike down to mystic beach is gorgeous and challenging! There are tons of exposed branches and a number of short steep hills. At the halfway mark you will hit a draw bridge that overlooks the canyon and it’s pretty dang neat. The reward at the end of the hike? A stunning forever view of the ocean with a multitude of camping spots and a rope swing at the waterfall! This hike is only a couple of kilometers but tons of fun.

East Sooke Park

East Sooke Park is a vast labyrinth of trails catering to every level of explorer. If you’re looking for a serious challenge, take the 10km route along the coast. If you would like a leisurely hike, head towards the Aylard Farm route. There are plenty of toilets, picnic areas and parking so you will not have to scour for spots to set up camp.

Gowlland Tod Provincial Park

Gowlland Tod is located up towards Brentwood Bay in the Highlands of Victoria. This park has some truly incredible views of the malahat/shawnigan/cobble hill and others. Explore the mountainside and wander along down to the shore to take in some sun rays and salty air.
