You either love them, or you hate them. But whether you despise the vessels that take hours to get you from A to B, or you adore the beautiful scenery that can only be enjoyed from the balcony of the Coastal Celebration, you’ll be interested to hear these 5 facts about the BC Ferries.

1) In 2015, BC Ferries launched a contest for people to come up with names for the next 3 ferries that were to be added to the fleet.. And the submissions seriously rivaled Boaty McBoatface. Click here for the full story.

2) The largest double-ended ferries in the world are BC Ferries’ C-class ships. You have likely ridden on them: the Coastal Celebration, the Coastal Renaissance, and the Coastal Inspiration.

3) BC Ferries travel across 25 different routes, with 26 vessels and 47 terminals. You can travel as far North as the Alaska border (Prince Rupert) or as far South as the southernmost tip of Vancouver Island.

4) In 2006, one of BC Ferries ships ran aground on Gill Island, sinking and killing two people. The crash was said to be caused because the only navigators on the bridge were two ex-lovers, distracted from making a critical turn.

5) BC Ferries inaugural sail was back in 1960, when the “fleet” consisted of two vessels, and only 200 employees.
