March 20th marked the first day of spring in Victoria this year, and spring has definitely sprung in the city! Everywhere you go you can see beautiful cherry blossoms in bloom – a quintessential part of a Victorian spring.
What are cherry blossoms? They are stunning white and pink flowers that bloom on the sakura tree. Cherry blossoms grow in China, Japan, Europe, India and Canada. Contrary to the name, the cherry blossom does not in fact produce fruit. Well, not the species that grows here in Victoria, at least. There are a number of related species that will produce cherries, but here on the island we love them for their pretty colours and their confirmation that spring is here!
Strap on some walking shoes, or hop in the car and explore the blooms in downtown Victoria.
