You know the ones…. The vast, towering, majestic pair of tall ships moored in the inner harbour; The rustic, wooden, 150 foot schooners that have an uncanny resemblance to the ships from Pirates of the Caribbean? Yes, those ones! Have you ever wondered “who the heck owns those?” or “how can I get on board?” or “Arrrrr ye looking for a crew member?”, well you’ve come to the right place, because we’ve got everything you need to know about the inner harbour pirate ships!

Let’s start with introductions: these beauties are named Pacific Grace and Pacific Swift, and they are part of the Sail and Life Training Society’s fleet (AKA SALTS). SALTS is a brand built to teach young adults (ages 13-25) how to sail and develop their spiritual, relational and physical potential. The Swift was constructed as a working exhibit at Expo ‘86. The Grace was built as a replica of an earlier ship named Robertson II, and was finished in 2001. Learn more about the creation of these two schooners here.

How do you get on board? SALTS runs multiple sailing programs throughout the year, along with custom group sailings that can be booked. You have the option to create an itinerary with the crew for a group of 20-30 individuals. On these group voyages, you will partake in formal sailing lessons (how to tie knots, parts of the ship, etc.) and ongoing training (navigation, marine radio watch, galley work etc.). They are willing to tailor their learning outcomes to your specific group, whether it be a youth group, a high school grad class, or a middle school biology class.

If you’re interested in taking part in a voyage but you are not part of a group, never fear! There are plenty of sailings available of individual sign ups. These range from day sails (75$ per person, limited dates) to 9-day long sailing adventures (varies)!

SALTS is always doing something new and exciting, and are always interested in teaching new sailors. They are currently working on building a new schooner to add to their fleet!
