You know what feels great? Giving back to the community. You know how to do so in Vic? ….We didn’t either.

So we did some research to find out how exactly we can volunteer in town, and what type of work we can do.

We are here to share our findings with you, and hopefully inspire you to get out into the community and contribute to a great cause!

If you’re interested in contributing some of your time to research, you may want to look at some of the initiatives at the University of Victoria or Camosun College. You have to choose which faculty/research you are particularly interested in, and then we recommend reaching out to the graduate studies supervisor. If you would like to volunteer to help out new students or at school events, follow this link: http://www.uvic.ca/volunteers/

If you’re looking to help fight homelessness then there are a number of organizations here in Victoria that you should look into. Duties at shelters can range from preparing beds, working the kitchen, or doing clean up. Every little bit helps. One of our favourite organizations is Out of the Rain. If your passion lies in health care, perhaps you should consider volunteering at one of our local hospitals. The Victoria General Hospital offers many different programs for patients that require lots of man-power to operate. Visit: http://www.viha.ca/volunteer_resources/opportunities/volunteer_vgh.htm to learn about opportunities to contribute!

If you’re passionate about making sure people have adequate amounts of food, volunteering at a food bank is a great way to help out! Food banks aren’t just in need around the holidays. Wander down to your nearest location and offer your services to pack hampers or organize donations. Start here: http://mustardseed.ca/get-involved/volunteer/

If you are looking to volunteer, but are not sure what you’d like to do, head to: http://volunteervictoria.bc.ca/ the hub which keeps you up to date on all the volunteer opportunities here in Victoria!

In conclusion, we’ve learned that there are always volunteer options available for programs that you are truly passionate about. Whether it be volunteering your time at an old folks home, volunteering your skills at a transcription office, or volunteering at an event – there is something out there for everyone!

Get involved in the community today by volunteering your time!
